ClockedIn: Clock In hour tracking App Case Study

Project Overview

The Problem

Business owners need a way to track their employees and their hours on the go.  Many businesses have employees that are at different sites or on the move every day and need to be able to clock in from their phones.

The Goal

Create an app that tracks employees' locations and hours for business owners.  Create an all-in-one experience to alleviate time and stress from business owners and employees.

The Product

ClockedIn was created due to my frustration with my past jobs and their means of hour tracking and clocking in.  My job as a security guard had me clock in using an app but it lacked many necessary features for employees.  It did/does cause a lot of frustration for me and my coworkers.  ClockedIn brings clarity and communication for your work, all to one place.

Roles and Responsibilities

For this project, I was the sole designer.  My responsibilities included paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, conducting interviews, accounting for accessibility, and iterating the designs.

User Pain Points

1. Forgetfulness

Employees constantly forget to clock in, which can create issues with getting paid correctly and on time.

2. Time

Payroll and tracking hours can take a lot of time for an employer or cost a lot of money to outsource.

3. Stress

It is stressful for employees and employers to remember the schedule and location for job sites or how many hours they worked and where.

Problem Statement

John is a security guard who needs a better app to track his job locations and times so he can better plan around his work schedule.

The Design

Paper Wireframes

I started with some rough sketches of the app's layout and different elements of the app.  My focus was to make the app the desired functions and be easily navigatable.  As clocking-in is the app's primary purpose, I wanted the function to be front and center on the home page.

Digital Wireframes

Functionality and clear user flows were the focus of these wireframes.  All information needed to be concise for minimal confusion.   For this project, I only completed some of the employee aspects of the app, not the employer's side.  In-app communication is a feature I didn't find in other popular hour tracking apps thought it may test positively in a user study.

Mockups

After some feedback and testing with the digital wireframes, I got to work on some mockups for the final prototype.  I wanted to aim for a clean minimalist design.  Not too many colors and a clear user flow.  The "Clock In" button is bright colored and the center of the home page, with other functions quickly identifiable with icons and text.  A simple dashboard with the date, time, company name, and whether the person is clocked in or not is a clean and helpful feature.

High Fidelity Prototype

The final prototype presents a clear user flow experience for employees to quickly clock in. check their schedules and communicate with fellow employees and clients from within the app.  It hosts several functions that greatly benefit the user and the employer.

Takeaways

From personal experience with bad hour tracking apps, I believe this app is a great improvement and would both employers and employees.  While this is only the employee side of the application, this project had a tight deadline schedule.  This was my first actual UX project and it is far from perfect but my skills have improved greatly just from this project alone.

Next Steps

As I look for a position in the field of UX design I will continue to focus on creating more projects, while bettering my current projects.  A design is never finished.  There are always ways to adapt and improve for your users and create a better experience for everyone.
